This picturesque cottage has an unbeatable location with superb unobstructed lake and majestic mountain views. It is located in Lake Ohau Alpine Village which is in a subalpine high country region between Mount Cook to the north and Wanaka and Queenstown to the south. But unlike Queenstown and Wanaka, there are no crowds in the Lake Ohau area. This is an "off the beaten track" part of New Zealand and an area that will never be built up. It is surrounded by thousands of hectares of conservation land filled with rugged mountains, tussocks, beech forests, and an extensive network of tracks and huts.
Lake Ohau and Lake Middleton are a few steps away. No need to pack your gear into a vehicle. Simply get up in the morning and walk down the hill, pulling your kayak on a trolley or carrying your fishing rod. In a couple of minutes you can be on the water. Chances are, you will be the only one out there enjoying the grandeur of the Southern Alps. The weather is changeable, though, and you need to keep your eyes open for strong north westerlies which can whip Lake Ohau up into a froth of spray and white caps. But unlike Queenstown, Lake Ohau is sheltered from the cold southerlies coming up from Antarctica, so it is often arguably the most pleasant place to be in the South Island.
Wonderful weather is one of the features of the Lake Ohau area. It is the constantly changing light, colours, and moods that make the area so fascinating to photographers, artists and nature lovers. It enjoys four seasons: a riot of colour in the spring; long, hot summer days; golden colours and crisp nights in the autumn; and gorgeous snowy vistas in the winter. You can be on the slopes of Ohau Snowfield in about half an hour in the winter. There is almost never a queue and the views are out of this world.
The Lake Ohau Cottage is also a perfect base for gliding as it is only 25 minutes away from Omarama, a world gliding centre. The world class rowing venue, (Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel), is also within a 25 minute drive.Lake Ohau Cottage commands a prime position in the village itself. The open plan living area faces north toward Lake Ohau and a snow capped mountain panorama. Views are guaranteed with only reserve between cottage and lake. There are gorgeous lake and mountain views from the kitchen area, dining area, living area and master bedroom. The cottage with its high ceilings is very charming. The established cottage garden is both beautiful and continually frequented by native birds. It is also very private and one can sit on the verandah with just nature as company.
